melanomaMelanoma is the most severe type of skin cancer that develops in the cells that give skin its color. If you or a loved one are at risk for melanoma, here are some of the most common indicators to remember, as well as all treatment options you can explore.

Top Symptoms of Melanoma

The American Cancer Society recommends using the ABCDE guide when identifying the usual signs of melanoma. Spots on your skin with any of the following characteristics need close monitoring and a visit to the doctor:

  • Asymmetry: Does one side of a mole or birthmark look different from the other?
  • Border: Are the edges of the spot blurred, notched, or irregularly shaped?
  • Color: Is the color of the spot inconsistent or different in some areas? Do the colors include varying shades, such as brown, black, pink, red, white, or blue?
  • Diameter: Is the spot larger than 6 millimeters wide (approximately a fourth of an inch)?
  • Evolving: Does the spot seem to be changing in any way, whether in size, shape, or color?

Melanomas can also sometimes be smaller than the size mentioned above. Always consult your doctor or specialist for the proper diagnosis.

Treatment for Melanoma

If It Has Not Spread

When melanoma has been discovered but has not spread, Mohs surgery is an effective removal method. During Mohs surgery, the melanoma and a thin layer of tissue around it are surgically eliminated. A quick microscopic inspection of this outermost layer is performed to determine whether or not any cancer cells remain. If so, a second ring of tissue is taken for examination. This is done until no more cancer cells can be found in the tissue. When undergoing Mohs surgery, the best results largely depend on ensuring that your surgeon is a current member of the American Society for Mohs Surgery (ASMS).

If It Has Spread

As mentioned, Mohs surgery is ideal for melanoma that has not yet had the opportunity to spread. However, if it has spread, it is treated in the same way as other cancers:

  • Surgical excision of the afflicted lymph nodes
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Immunotherapy
