Position Summary:
The Histology Technologist is responsible for processing all tissues and fluids submitted to the department, preparing/staining tissue slides and assuring they are available in a timely manner for Pathologist review and interpretation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.
MOHS responsibility:
- Specimen handling, storage, preservation and identification
- Freezing tissue and cutting frozen sections with a microtome
- Staining and placing tissue on slides
- Labeling and storage of slides
- Preparation and mixing of solutions used in MOHS lab
- Use and handling of all materials and reagents
- Disposal of stains and cleaning of glass containers and Petri dishes
- Maintenance and review of all equipment and materials in the lab
- Maintaining and updating OSHA and CLIA records
- Recording daily temperatures of cryostat
- Participating in relative studies by maintaining proper records
- Ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA standards (i.e. changing fume hood filters, safety glasses, gloves, etc.)
- Maintaining quality control logs for slide review
- Maintaining log for patient identification system
- Ensures service excellence by becoming thoroughly familiar with the Seven Principles of behavior and putting them into practice in carrying out job responsibilities
- Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, Billing compliance and safety guidelines
Derm Path Lab/ Histo Tech responsibility:
- Accessioning and grossing the tissue which includes measuring, inking and cutting, and entering the information into the computer under the patient name.
- Processing and embedding tissues.
- Cutting the tissues on a microtome and mounting on slides for staining.
- H&E stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Special Stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using an automated stainer or by hand.
- Daily maintenance of all equipment.
- Routine filing of slides and blocks.
- Experience Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in science related field is required.

Mohs Histotechnician/ Medical Assistant
I am a general dermatologist who performs Mohs one day a week and am looking for a Mohs histotechnician who can work 1-2 days per week part time. If full time employment is desired, remainder of time is to be spent as scribe/ medical assistant or as front desk receptionist.
Histotechnical responsibilities include the following:
- Processing of frozen section biopsies and Mohs sections.
- Maintaining CLIA- compliant Mohs lab and preparing for CLIA inspections.
- Ordering necessary supplies.
- Maintaining OSHA standards.
1 year experience in frozen section processing is preferred, but more importantly is the skill and ability to produce good quality frozen sections in a timely manner. Formal training/ certification is desirable but not necessary
Mohs Histotechnologist
Due to increasing patient demand for our two Mohs surgeons, we are seeking an experienced Mohs histotechnologist to add to our team.
Responsibilities include:
- Mohs frozen section preparation – mapping, labeling, grossing, inking, embedding, sectioning, staining and cover slipping
- Proper organizing and storage of slides
- Routine maintenance and cleaning of histology equipment and materials

MOHS Tech
Equipment and Supplies
- Performs all daily checks and quality controls as required based on standards and equipment requirements.
- Prepares and maintains dilutions and stains
- Maintains and clean laboratory equipment per standard
- Schedules maintenance of equipment, e.g. Cryostats according to OSHA standards
- Responsible for assuring that routine preventative maintenance performed on all equipment per protocol
- Monitors inventory levels of supplies and equipment on a regular basis and communicate with clinic leadership for ordering as needed.
- Maintains log of supplies as they are ordered and received.
- Organizes supplies and equipment in a systematic and accessible fashion.
Slides & Specimen Requirements
- Maps and chromacodes tissue specimens according to Mohs technique
- Cuts horizontal frozen sections
- Prepares microscopic slides
- Submits slides as requested by Mohs surgeon for viewing and diagnosis.
- Maintains quality control on all slides processed and monitors ongoing QC study requirements
- Labels, files and stores histological slides according to protocol
Documentation and Log Requirements
- Enters Mohs map data accurately in Mohs database each day
- Keeps records as to the location of all slides in our possession
- Orders and returns slides to outside laboratories or offices
- Creates and maintains accurate files and logs needed for records. Enter, update and record information accurately and timely.
- Maintains CLIA documentation as required by guidelines.
- Graduate of an accredited Histotechnology program, preferred, but not required
- Background in Biology or Chemistry preferred.
- One year of Mohs Histotech or Histotech experience preferred, but not required.
- Mohs certification preferred.
- Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
- Experience with an electronic health record.
- Ability to discern color as this is necessary to perform the job functions.
Mohs Technician
We are seeking a PT/FT (up to 5 days/week) Mohs technician to assist us with Mohs surgery at our S. Denver location. You will be working with a Board-Certified Mohs surgeon (Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery)
- You must have prior Mohs tech experience ( cutting tissue, working with a cryostat, slide preparation, tissue staining). You must also have prior surgical assistant experience, as you will need to assist the Mohs surgeon with the Mohs procedure.
