Do Something For You: Join the American Society for Mohs Surgery

Dermatologists provide an enormous service to their patients. By taking the time to listen to concerns and goals, perform a thorough examination of the skin, and make thoughtful recommendations for care, a dermatologist makes a profound contribution to their patients’ sense of well-being. There may be no disease in which compassionate, creative care is more crucial than skin cancer. In this area, the dermatologist who has received advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of various skin cancers has done something meaningful for their patients and their practice.

In recent years, consumers have become more aware of the risks and signs of skin cancer. However, this has not resulted in a decrease in case numbers. We continue to fight what feels like an uphill battle in reducing statistics in skin cancer diagnoses. Where we can focus, then, is on creating new pathways that can improve the long-term prognosis for each patient. Mohs surgery does this, which is why a membership with the American Society for Mohs Surgery can be the best thing a dermatologist gifts themselves in 2021.

The ASMS was established more than two decades ago with the goal of providing residency-trained dermatologists the professional support and advanced educational courses needed to elevate their practices. The founders of the American Society for Mohs Surgery were residency-trained dermatologists themselves, each of whom had also been trained to perform Mohs micrographic surgery. Their unique experience was the motivating factor in developing a program in which residency-trained physicians could benefit from the association with and mentorship of fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons.

ASMS Members are Supported in Several Ways

Our objective in welcoming new members is to expand doctors’ base of knowledge as well as clinical skills. Membership with the ASMS provides access to carefully curated medical education courses that reinforce Mohs concepts. Courses are not limited to textbooks and presentations; they are multi-dimensional in the review of recent Mohs advances and demonstration of various techniques. Additionally, our members can participate in a formal Peer Review program that enhances quality assurance evaluation.

Enhance Your Practice in the Coming Year

As we approach that time of year when we’re motivated to set new goals, now is an excellent time for professional advancement. The ASMS welcomes those certified by the American Board of Dermatology or the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology.
