Why We’re Here

Board-certified dermatologists contribute to their patients’ health and wellness. One of the ways they do this is by performing skin cancer screenings and providing patients with the critical information they need to remain aware of their risks and the importance of routine skin cancer exams. While we have seen an increase in consumer awareness regarding skin cancer, recent years have also included an increase in the rates of skin cancer. This indicates the need for patients in high-risk groups, as well as those who are not aware of their risk for skin cancer, to have access to dermatologists with extensive training in the area of skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.

This is where the American Society for Mohs Surgery comes in. Our organization was founded more than 25 years ago. The objective of our founders was to provide Residency-trained dermatologists with the critical education and professional support necessary to super-power their practices. Each of our founders was a Residency-trained dermatologist who had implemented Mohs micrographic surgery into their practice. Each agreed that it made sense to become the first organization to welcome Residency-trained physicians. The structure of the organization allows Residency-trained dermatologists to receive education and support from Fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons; those with the first-hand, unique experiences, and knowledge needed to implement advanced skin cancer treatment into practice.

Meeting Critical Objectives

Professional organizations are intended to increase success among its members. The ASMS was established to help physicians expand their knowledge and skill levels related to Mohs surgery. This has been and continues to be achieved through professional medical education courses aimed at reinforcing the principals of dermatologic surgery and the Mohs technique. Courses include presentations and multi-dimensional demonstrations relevant to the advances in skin cancer treatment. Members receive further support through our formal Peer Review program and quality assurance assessment.

Motivated Physicians are Welcome

The ASMS welcomes physicians board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology or the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology to apply for Affiliate or Fellow membership. This opens doors to additional training through advanced courses and professional associations with other physicians who are dedicated to the highest standards of care.
