In this role, the successful candidate involves preparing frozen tissue specimens for examination during Mohs micrographic surgery. The Mohs Clinical Histotechnician is essential in ensuring accurate, timely pathology results while maintaining laboratory standards for safety, quality control, and regulatory compliance. The position requires independent judgment, expertise in frozen specimen preparation, histology protocols, and special stains, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while ensuring accuracy and adherence to all laboratory and regulatory standards. Monday to Friday 7:00 am – 3:00 pm

Experience/Qualifications

Tissue Preparation & Slide Work: Accession, gross/ink, embed, section, H&E stain, cover-slip specimens; prepare special stains and solutions (e.g., Mart-1); perform frozen sections using a cryostat.

Quality Assurance & Documentation: Maintain QC logs, reagent and H&E logs; ensure accurate documentation of procedures and specimen information; maintain updated lab and safety documentation.

Lab Equipment & Safety: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab instruments; train staff on new equipment; manage chemical storage and disposal per safety protocols.

Compliance & Regulation: Follow all NYS and health/safety standards; ensure ongoing certification and adherence to Mohs lab protocols.

Training & Support: Assist in training technologists, technicians, and support staff; provide supervisory support in the absence of a lab supervisor.

Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned to maintain laboratory workflow and efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications:
Associates degree from an approved clinical laboratory technician program. A high school degree will only be accepted if the individual has the designated experience defined by NYS and has obtained their NYS license through the grandparenting pathway defined by NYS. Six months of experience in a histology laboratory. Certification by the NYS Education Department as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Certified Histological Technician is required.
Required Licenses: Certified Histotechnician, Clinical Lab Technician-NYS, Clinical Lab Technologist-NYS

Preferred Qualifications: American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification as a Histology Technician (ASCP-HT) preferred. NY STATE License required

Job Description

The Dermatology Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is seeking a Mohs Technician at any level (I, II, or III) to support Mohs micrographic surgery within our laboratory. Whether you are beginning your laboratory career or bringing advanced histotechnology experience, we welcome candidates across all levels. The basic responsibilities and minimum qualifications for each level are outlined in the overview section below.

This role supports precise tissue preparation and frozen section analysis to ensure accurate surgical margin assessment and high-quality patient care.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week day shift position, working Monday through Friday; no weekends or holidays required.

Mohs Technician I – Entry Level
Pay Range: $21.72 – $33.67/hr

Ideal for candidates beginning their laboratory career.

What You’ll Do:

  • Receive, label, and prepare tissue specimens
  • Assist with embedding, sectioning, staining, and coverslipping
  • Maintain documentation and specimen tracking
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized lab environment
  • Follow infection prevention and laboratory protocols

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Laboratory or healthcare experience (preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Dependability and willingness to learn

Mohs Technician II – Intermediate Level
Pay Range: $24.58 – $38.10/hr

For technicians with hands-on cryostat and frozen section experience.

What You’ll Do:

  • Orient and embed tissue for frozen sectioning
  • Perform cryostat sectioning and routine staining independently
  • Conduct quality control checks and maintain documentation
  • Assist with training and mentoring entry-level staff
  • Ensure compliance with safety and laboratory policies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree or Medical Technology + 1 year of experience
  • OR an Associate’s degree in Science or Medical Technology + 3 years of experience
  • OR 4–5 years relevant laboratory experience
  • Proficiency in cryostat operation and frozen tissue processing
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Certification (ASCP, ASMH, or equivalent) preferred

Mohs Technician III – Advanced/Senior Level
Pay Range: $26.47 – $41.03/hr

For experienced technicians with advanced technical and leadership skills.

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform advanced tissue embedding, sectioning, and troubleshooting
  • Ensure precise tissue orientation for surgical margin assessment
  • Oversee lab workflow, quality control, and equipment calibration
  • Analyze results and ensure accurate reporting
  • Train and mentor Mohs I and II technicians
  • Maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree or Medical Technology + a minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory experience
  • OR an Associate’s degree + a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • OR 9 years of relevant laboratory experience
  • Required certification (ASCP, ASMH, advanced training course, or equivalent)
  • Advanced cryostat and staining proficiency
  • Leadership, mentoring, and quality assurance experience

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced tissue embedding, cryostat sectioning, staining, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensures accurate tissue orientation for margin assessment during Mohs procedures.
  • Oversees laboratory workflow, quality control, and equipment calibration.
  • Analyzes diagnostic test results and ensures accurate reporting.
  • Trains and guides Mohs Technician I and II staff in advanced methods.
  • Develops, updates, and enforces laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with hospital, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or Medical Technology and minimum of three (3) years of relevant laboratory experience OR Associates Degree and minimum of five (5) years of relevant laboratory experience OR nine (9) years of relevant laboratory experience
  • Completion of Mohs Technician III technical competency.
  • Certification required at hire:
  • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), or
  • ASMH (American Society for Mohs Histotechnology), or
  • Completion of Mohs Technician Advanced Training Course, or
  • Equivalent credential approved by the Laboratory Director.
  • Advanced proficiency in cryostat sectioning and staining techniques.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory accreditation standards and quality systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex laboratory issues.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to manage workflow and support clinical teams.
