2012 Closure Course and Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery

THE CLOSURE COURSE - November 5-7, 2012

The Closure course is designed to provide a unique learning experience for dermatologists who are already comfortable with basic surgical closures and wish to take their reconstruction skills to the next level.  Course will include discussion of flaps, grafts, fusiform closures, and specific anatomic locations, as well as practical "pearls" gleaned from highly experienced dermatologic surgeons.  The Closure course will immediately proceed this year's Fundamentals of Mohs Surgery course, and participants may register for one or both events.  Registration fee is $650 for ASMS members, $450 for Resident members, and $800 for non-member physicians.

Closure course participants will be able to download lectures ahead of time to their laptop computers, and bring laptops to the lecture sessions.  You will then have the opportunity to add your own notes to each lecture slide for later review.

PLEASE NOTE:  New this year to the Closure Course is the addition of an elective hands-on session using high fidelity visco-elastic surgical models.  This will enable participants to immediately practice concepts covered in the lecture material.  Participants each will work with a partner, two persons per model.  There is a separate $225 fee for this elective.

Registration sign-in will open at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5 and the Closure course will begin at 1:00 p.m.

FUNDAMENTALS OF MOHS SURGERY - November 8-11, 2012

The Fundamentals course offers instruction in the basic surgical, histopathology and laboratory skills necessary for the performance of Mohs surgery.  This course will provide a solid foundation upon which physicians and Mohs technicians will build upon to become proficient Mohs practitioners.  The physician session contains a wide variety of lecture topics specific to the Mohs surgical technique, office set-up and instruction, lab supervision, etc., richly combined with related histopathology discussions and hands-on dermpath intepretation practice.

Mohs technicians will be instructed in basic cryostat skills and related laboratory practices, as required for accurate and efficient processing of Mohs tissue specimens. A strong emphasis is placed on the production of high-quality slides for interpretation by the Mohs surgeon, as well as important troubleshooting skills.  Safety and government compliance issues also are discussed throughout the program.

Please bear in mind that Mohs technician spaces are more limited in number due to the hands-on nature of this training and number of cryostats available -- early registration is strongly advised.  Registration sign-in for both physicians and technicians will take place on Wednesday evening, November 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will continue on Thursday morning, November 8 prior to the first lecture session.  (See above for course brochure with registration form and daily schedules for all sessions.)
